Bloom
Short story I started when I was inspired by the song “Bloom” by The Paper Kites…experimenting with second person and present tense. ~Miella

”Come on,” I say as I race ahead of you, off into the forest nearby.      You sigh and shake your head, knowing my behavior was ordinary. Giving in, you run, too, in hopes of catching up with me.      The grass tickling my bare feet is long, but only long enough to hide my feet. My cares had melted away as soon as we arrived—your presence made me feel as if nothing could ever harm me. I run faster, ensuing that you would not be able to catch me. Giggles escape our mouths as the butterflies in our stomachs fly away.      Finally, as if we couldn’t go on any longer, we fall into the grass. Once the laugher calms itself, I close my eyes. I can feel your gaze, watching me as I simply take in the moment. I soak in the sunshine, seeing it through my closed eyelids, feeling it through my sun dress. You watch me, a smile on your face. How crazy is this, you think as you look back to when we first met. Neither of us would have thought that we’d end up here.      But we did.      I open my eyes, when I cannot stand the feeling of someone watching me anymore. Even though I knew I’d meet your gaze, I couldn’t help but smile and laugh a little, to myself. You look confused, not understanding my surprise.
